LEADERSHIP

HISTORY:

In 1996 through the support of the Association of Funding Organizations (AFO), the Planning Council for Health and Human Services, Inc. conducted a study of Early Childbearing and Adolescent Pregnancy. As a result of the AFO's findings, the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and Parenting Collaborative (APPPC) was formed. In 2003, APPPC changed its name to Youth Connections based on input from teen volunteers.

To reduce adolescent pregnancy, comprehensive efforts must be made early in children's lives to support and empower their parents to raise healthy and competent adolescents who can then recognize that they have better options than early sexual activity and pregnancy.

To accomplish this, we will need to:
  • support new parents and their children for the first six years of the child's life
  • address the poverty issues plaguing our society
  • provide parenting programs for both male and female adults and adolescents
  • incorporate child abuse survival training into parenting and support programs for both males and females
  • provide quality and affordable childcare
  • provide training/education for both males and females

2008 STRATEGIES:
  • Strategy #1: Increase community, parent and youth input into Collaborative planning (Initiate 3 focus groups in 2008 to obtain input)

  • Strategy #2: Strengthen media relations to build awareness campaign on consequences of teen pregnancy and actions needed (Identify two new contacts to develop)

  • Strategy #3: Increase youth/community/business awareness and knowledge and plan action to link sexual violence awareness with teen pregnancy issues. (Work with sub-committee of Family Violence)

  • Strategy #4: Strengthen youth involvement, including teen parents in outreach work. (Organize opportunities for teen parents to share their stories with middle school/ high school youth)
